These kinetic wearables can change into different formations and patterns

The scientists from MIT and Stanford invented a small robot that could change the future of fashion. They launched their latest robotic invention just last year and called it “rovable”.

“Rovable”, as what the creators call it, are tiny robots that crawl all over the surface of clothing as an accessory. These wearable bots can move around any garment through magnetic wheels. Each has a microcontroller, an antenna, and a 100mAh battery so that it can communicate with a computer.

ROVABLE TO PROJECT KINO

A year after, the rovable is now called The Project Kino. The team from MIT and Stanford partnered with the designers from London’s Royal College of Art to develop the wearable bot. The fusion of science and art aims to get an aesthetic and functional result out of these accessories.

In fact, the team working under Project Kino is studying on how to refine the technology of this electronic accessory. The goal is to come up with a fashionable knick-knack that is both visually appealing and the same time functional. In the visual aspect, the kinetic wearables serve as jewelry with a bot or two crawling on the surface of a clothing mixing and matching shapes and patterns.

These tiny robots can move around a garment through a magnetic drive system. No matter the orientation or position, the robot accessory stays in place since there is a magnet underneath the fabric. The electronic accessories can also navigate autonomously. That means that they can independently create formations and patterns at random.

The electronic accessories can also navigate autonomously. That means that they can freely create formations and patterns at random. They can shift around parts of the outfit to create dynamic geometric designs. Not only that, but the kinetic wearables can also etch on different types of cloth such as velvet.

If a wearer wishes to “program” an individual design, this can be easily controlled by the wearer himself as well. In the functionality aspect, the high-tech accessories can also serve as built-in microphones.  It doesn’t end there. The presence of the bots on the person’s clothing transforms the outfit worn into a climate-reactive clothing. Imagine automatic hoodies.

THESE TINY ROBOTS ARE THE FUTURE OF FASHION

The reception of the kinetic wearable was not positive at first. Fashion critics said that tiny bots crawling in the chest is weird, uncomfortable, and a bit off.  As of now, the surveys gathered showed that it is the size of the robots that adds to its creepiness. Thus, the team plans to further look into the possibilities of miniaturizing the already-tiny fashion robots. The goal is to make it more compact and aesthetically pleasing while remaining to be functional.

There are still many objections and violent reactions, but Project Kino team member Cindy Hsin-Liu Kao asserts the beauty of these fashion robots. She says that these electronic accessories can one day serve the purpose of a personal fashion assistant. Imagine tiny robots that have the ability to learn its wearer’s fashion sense. When the developers finally succeed in combining fashion and function, then these kinetic wearables are here to stay.
